Shades of Green Hosta Society of Southeast Minnesota, Inc.

April 6, 2006 Minutes

The April 6, 2006 meeting of the Shades of Green Hosta Society of Southeast MN, Inc. (SOGHS) was held in the Fellowship Hall of Good Shepherd Church on 20th St. SW, Rochester. After a brief social time, the meeting was called to order by President Cindy Tomashek at 6:45 pm.

The minutes of the February 2nd meeting were approved with no corrections. Cindy discussed fund raising efforts in progress: group orders for the Hosta Finder book and special hosta plants. We need a Fund Raising Chair and anyone wishing to fill that position should let Cindy know. Per a Board decision, because of liability issues, waivers will be required for all SOGHS tours. Cindy is investigating insurance options that may be available through the American Hosta Society.

Committee Reports: Casey Funk (1st VP-Tours) gave an update on the June 4th Bus Tour to Dubuque Iowa. The registration deadline is April 15th; those interested in attending should contact Casey as soon as possible. The estimated cost for members is $20; non-members $25. A sign-up sheet was available at the meeting for summer member garden tours.

Lynn Knott (2nd VP-Programs/Education) is looking for ideas for programs for future meetings.

Betty Olson (3rd VP-Membership/Promotions) is working on a membership directory. The deadline to join with Charter Member status is June 1st.

Linda Orleff (Secretary/Historian) is working on a scrapbook for SOGHS and would appreciate pictures and info from members.

Mona Keehn (Treasurer) was not able to attend because of illness, but reported a bank balance of $1,728.40. This balance includes pre-payments for the Hosta Finder books, group plant sale and the bus tour.

Jean Meyer (Newsletter) is looking for volunteers to write member profiles and garden reports for the newsletter. To save money, she will email newsletters to members with email addresses unless they request differently.

Vickie LeCocq is assisting Doug Gustafson (Webmaster) with the website. You can send pictures and information to Vicki at rdfmwm@yahoo.com.

Old Business: Members were asked to sign-up for the committee of their choice. We need everyone's help and there are jobs to match almost every talent and time-availability. The Board will make committee assignments for those who do not do so at the meeting.

April 06, 2006 Business Minutes

New Business: Barb Armbruster of Song Sparrow Embroidery passed around an embroidered sample of the SOGHS logo and samples of shirts and caps that can be ordered with the logo. More information for ordering will be available on the website. ** Nature's Way Nursery has invited SOGHS to participate in their Gardener's Garage Sale on April 22, 2006. All proceeds from items donated by SOGHS members will go to SOGHS. A sign-up sheet was passed around for items to donate and workers to help. We are looking for garden-related items (not plants) and baked goods (which apparently sell really well at these sales.)

In response to a request for sponsorship of the Olmsted County Fair Horticulture Award, members approved a vote for SOGHS to sponsor two $15 awards this year.

A sign-up sheet was circulated for donations for the silent auction fundraiser to be held in conjunction with the garden tour at Cindy's house in May. Cindy will donate a special (currently unregistered) gold hosta to be named Piedmont Honey at the auction.

If anyone is interested in a judging clinic, they should contact Cindy.

The lucky winners of the door prize drawings were: Karen Nolte (slug bait) and Cindy Schaeffer (garden gloves). Homemade Scottish shortbread and caramels were provided by Tricia Torrens-Burton. With the business portion of the meeting concluded, Cindy Tomashek gave a presentation on Hosta Identification which included handouts and a slideshow of the 2005 AHS Convention. The hour-long slideshow featured beautiful hostas from AHS member gardens to inspire us all to get out in our gardens.
