Shades of Green Hosta Society of Southeast Minnesota, Inc.

February 2, 2006 Minutes

The first annual meeting of Shades of Green Hosta Society of Southeast MN, Inc. (SOGHS) was held at the Rochester Public Library in the auditorium. After a brief social time, Organizational Chair Cindy Tomashek called the meeting to order at 6:50 pm. Cindy welcomed the 45 members and guests attending.

The minutes of the October 6, 2005 meeting were approved with no corrections. Cindy reported that the hosta society has been incorporated in the state of Minnesota as a non-profit organization and a bank account has been set up for the organization at Home Federal Bank. As decided at the last meeting, dues are $10 for individuals and $15 for families. Members were asked to pay before leaving the meeting.

The hosta society website is up and running. Doug Gustafson, our webmaster, was thanked for the great job he did with both content and pictures. Doug asked members to send him pictures and suggestions for ideas of information to be included on the website. Pictures can be submitted to Doug either by email or by mailing a photo for scanning.

Members attending were asked to sign up for a committee of their choice. The committee choices are Tours, Programs/Education and Membership/Promotions. Those not selecting a committee will be assigned to one by the Board at a later date.

The next hosta society meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 6, 2006 or Thursday, April 13, 2006. The date will be determined by the meeting location chosen. Possible options are: Rochester Public Library which charges $50 for the room rental or the Good Shepherd Fellowship Hall which is free if available. The meeting will start with a social time at 6:30 pm.

Cindy circulated two wonderful SOGHS logo designs developed by Yvonne Landgren for members to review. The majority voted for a beautiful design featuring seven different hosta leaves displayed in a fan shape. (That logo is now displayed on the SOGHS website.) Yvonne gave the rights for the design to SOGHS and was thanked for her generous contribution of time and talent.

The following slate of officers was proposed by the nominating committee: President – Cindy Tomashek, 1st Vice President (Tours) – Casey Funk, 2nd Vice President (Programs/Education) – Lynn Knott, 3rd Vice-President (Membership/Promotions) – Betty Olson, Secretary/Historian – Linda Orleff, Treasurer - Mona Keehn, Newsletter Editor – Jean Meyer. Cindy asked for nominations from the floor. There being no further nominations, the slate of officers proposed was unanimously elected.

Newsletter editor, Jean Meyer, asked that information for the next SOGHS newsletter be submitted to her (by mail or email) by February 20, 2006.

Names were drawn for door prizes generously donated by President Cindy Tomashek. The prizes were hosta books and the lucky winners were Dick Kerrigan and Diane Larson.

With the business portion of the meeting concluded, Master Gardener Ed Schulz of Dubuque, Iowa gave an hour long presentation on hostas. His discussion included the history of hostas, his favorite varieties from each of the hosta categories, some of the best and worst hostas to grow, sun-loving hosta varieties and up-and-coming hostas to look for. His presentation concluded with a slide show of his hosta gardens in Dubuque. Members were invited to his annual hosta walk on the first Saturday in June each year. His handouts will be posted on the website.
